Western Supermarket has been an integral part of the Birmingham, Alabama, community for 60 years. When several big box retailers expanded their presence in the area, Western asked Store Design Services to help revitalize its suburban Mountain Brook store in order to keep their competitive edge.

Store Design Services interior design department was the major force behind this remodel. According to creative director Harry Steen, "The goal was to make the store more of an upscale shopping environment, more of a destination." The creative team decided to take out the original ceiling panels, a technique that opened up the store and gave it an airy feeling. The ceiling was then painted dark, making way for dramatic, theater-style lighting in each department.

A warm earth-toned color palette, along with special décor items like faux-brick walls and vinyl wood flooring, help to give the store an inviting, upscale atmosphere. Store Design Services also designed Western Supermarket's new brand mark, which is now being used on store signage and promotional materials.
