An A.R.E. Retail Design Award-winning project, The Market is a unique gourmet grocery store designed to showcase fresh foods in a rustic setting modeled after a 19th century farmer's market.

Using custom wooden fixtures, sandblasted redwood signage and other specialty items, Store Design Services interior designers created an inviting vintage look with an emphasis on subtle detail and authenticity. The store's dyed concrete floor evokes the look of worn leather, and gondola lights line the shelves to highlight The Market's products in a warm glow.

Unique fixtures such as a kitchen cupboard aisle end cap, rolling handcar produce display and hayloft bakery/cheese island emphasize the store's "farm fresh" look and feel.

With only 13,500 square feet to work with, Store Design Services store planners had to carefully account for every bit of available space. They settled on an open layout with relatively low shelves to give shoppers a broad view of the entire store from nearly every vantage point.

The Store Design Services architecture & engineering team designed the interior of the store, working closely with Elkus Manfredi Architects, a Boston firm that designed the exterior shell.  Given The Market's high arched ceiling, Store Design Services lead architect Mike Klein helped coordinate the suspended lighting necessary to adequately light the store, while minimizing the appearance of exposed electric conduit.  Store Design Services A/E specialists also designed the plumbing, mechanical and electrical systems to be contained within the store's small basement area.

Few stores this size feature full-service meats and deli, but the owners of The Market asked Store Design Services to procure these elements, along with an on-site bake shop, rotisserie and sushi display.  In addition, Equipment Services selected a 15-foot ceiling fan that circulates air and serves as a focal point for the store.
