Reducing our carbon footprint
In December, 2013, SUPERVALU's Mechanicsville, VA distribution center introduced a new fleet of 35 delivery trucks that operate on compressed natural gas. These environmentally-friendly trucks, representing the largest private fleet of its kind in the mid-Atlantic region, will serve 500 grocery stores in Delaware, North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, West Virginia, and Washington, D.C. Our decision to transition to natural-gas-powered trucks is in keeping with SUPERVALU's long-standing commitment to do business in a sustainable manner. It translates to lower operating costs, a reduction in oil consumption by more than 1 million gallons and 1,300 fewer tons of greenhouse gas emissions.
In 2012, SUPERVALU expanded our seafood sustainability commitment to include both farm-raised and wild-caught seafood, and also announced the discontinuation of six wild-caught seafood species (orange roughy, shark, monk, bluefin tuna, skates, and hoki) due to unsustainable sourcing concerns. This builds on our commitment with World Wildlife Fund (WWF) to source 100 percent of our top twenty wild-caught seafood products from fisheries that are Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certified, in full assessment, or involved in a fishery improvement project (FIP) with WWF by 2015. As part of this work, SUPERVALU is supporting the Indonesian tuna FIP. SUPERVALU also entered into a formal partnership with the Global Aquaculture Practices (GAA) to implement a comprehensive procurement policy in which the company will adopt Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP) certification for farm-raised seafood.
